“Here, I will build the city of my dreams” The city of Alexandria was established by Alexander the Great in 331 BC.
His architect, Dinocratis, chose a special style, similar to the one of a chess board - two main perpendicular streets crossed by other small streets parallel to the main ones.
Alexandria was the capital of Egypt from the time of Ptolemy I, Ptolemy II and until the Arabic Conquest in 641 AD.
During the Roman period, Alexandria was considered the source of civilization and culture, due to its universities and scientific institutions.
Coming from Cairo to Alexandria you can take two roads, the Agricultural Road (225 km) and the Desert Road (221 km). |

Alexandria certainly is beautiful and impressive, especially the St. Mark Cathedral and the HUGE Quait-Bey Fort. |
