The Holy Family journey in Egypt: Mostorod

According to tradition, the Holy Family travelled from Bethlehem in Palestine to Tel Basta passing through Rafah, Al-Arish, and Farama in north Sinai.

From Tel Basta the Holy Family arrived to Mostorod, located 10 km north of Cairo, where they stayed in a crypt which today is part of the church.

Mostorod is part of greater Cairo and is located on the agricultural road from Cairo to Bilbays.

Mostorod is also called Al-Mahamma, which in Arabic means "The Bathing Place", a name given to the town because Mary bathed the Christ Child in this place and washed his clothes.
Today in Mostoros can be visited the Church of the Holy Virgin with the cave in which the Holy Family found shelter after a long day of traveling and the well that Jesus created, which the Holy Family used for drinking, washing and bathing.

It is worth to mentione that, on their way back to Palestine, the Holy Family stopped once more at Mostorod and, this time, caused a spring to gush from the earth. This spring still flows today.

The recorded history of the church goes back to 1185 A.D. when Pope Marcos III built a great church on this place, dedicated to the Holy Virgin.

Coptic Christians make a pilgrimage to Mostorod in August for the feast of the assumption of the holy Virgin.

WOW! The Crypt with a mosaic of the Virgin May and Child is absolutely beautiful, as are all the wonderful icons. Lovely page Diana.
