Aachen - Kaiserdom by night

by Diana75 - last update: Jan 13, 2006

Although Aachen was not in our plans for the trip to Germany, in August 2005, on our way back from Belgium, we decided to have a short stop to admire the magnificent Cathedral, included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage, the church of coronation for 30 German kings.

It was quite late in the night when we arrived and probably the fact that it was an unprepared visit made us lose some of the city's attractions.

By day Aachen is surely a lovely city with its pedestrian center, but also by night a walk on the streets around the Cathedral is really worthing.
The construction of Palace Chapel was initiated by Charlemagne in 786 and transforming it in the splendid Cathedral of today took more than a millennium.

Presenting Classical, Byzantine and Germanic-Franconian architectural elements, the Cathedral was one of the first 12 items to entry into the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in 1978.

The Aachen Cathedral treasury exhibits important masterpieces of the late Classical, Carolingian, Ottonian and Staufian period, such as "Cross of Lothair", the "Bust of Charlemagne" and the "Persephone sarcophagus".

Other attractions of the city are: Granusturm (Granus Tower), Karlsbrunnen, Kitchen Garden of Charlemagne, first town hall of Aachen built in 1267.
