    Things To Do: Boating
  • Tip Rating:
  • Halifax - Cruising in Nova Scotia
  • Cruising in Nova Scotia

  • All over Nova Scotia there is boating. Everything from chartering pleasure craft, taking a sail on our famous Blue Nose 11Sail Boat or even learning to sail...
Sailing trips can be booked with Nova Scotia South Shore Sailing Adventures. They sail out of Chester NS , which is an hour from halifax and offer 2 - 5 day live aboard sailing charters.

Cape Breton is another gorgeous area for boating in Nova Scotia , especially on the Bras D'or Lakes the largest salt water lake (inland sea) in the world. Catch a fish and see an American Bald Eagle! Fan a Sea is a company offering various types of power boat trips , fishing and cruising. http://baddeck.com/fan-a-sea/

The season is June to Seotember.

Waterfront / Historic Properties: See the whales
  • Tip Rating:
  • Have you ever seen whales in their natural habitat. In Nova Scotia we have many whales . Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Blue Whales, Right Whales and more all live in our waters.

In the late spring the Finback Whales, Minke Whales and Harbour Porpoises are the first to arrive from their southern breeding grounds. In June, The Humpback Whales return, and by late June, the Humpbacks are abundant.

There are tons of tours to pick from on the Halagonian111. They start at 10:30 AM and rin until 7:30 PM . The price is $33.95 with family rates available for a 2 1/2 hour cruise.

Halifax Harbour: Take a ferry ride
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're on a budget a good inexpensive way to see the Halifax waterfront by sea is to take the ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth.

The Halifax/Dartmouth ferry departs every 15 or 30 minutes from each side of the harbour on weekdays and half-hourly on Saturdays and holidays. Half-hourly Sunday service (Dartmouth service only) noon to 6pm, June to September. MetroInfo: 490-6600.

The Halifax ferry terminal is located at the foot of George Street. The Dartmouth ferry terminal is on Alderney Drive at the foot of Queen Street.

Waterfront / Historic Properties: A walk back in time
  • Tip Rating:
  • You haven’t experienced Halifax till you visit the Historic Properties. On the waterfront of the city’s downtown core, it takes you back to a different time, when merchant ships, privateers and naval ships plied the Harbour.
It’s well worth your time to spend an afternoon ambling around the area, soaking up the history. It feels as if nothing’s changed.

There are lots of pubs , restaurants, and shopping as well.

Things To Do: Halifax's North End
  • Tip Rating:
  • The North End is best known for the disaster of December 6, 1917, commonly referred to as the Halifax Explosion. Prior to the explosion, the North End was the focus of the city's business community.Located at the foot of North Street, factories, cotton mills and prisons lining the waterfront, along with major defence installations such as HMC Dockyard and the Stadacona Barracks (now part of CFB Halifax).

In recent years, the North End has become a popular destination for Halifax's growing university population. Cheaper rent has also attributed to a thriving artistic community, with many painters, musicians and writers being lured to this colourful section of the city. Thanks in part to this environment, the North End has also become the popular area for Halifax's gay population. However, the North End is often linked to issues of crime and poverty. It is not inherently unsafe, especially in the daytime, when young families and students go about their business. Its historic reputation as a largely blue collar, working class area remains in the minds of much of the local population, especially the older citizens.

It is an interesting and colorful area to take a walk , with colorful wooden houses in rows.

    Peggy's Cove: Puffin Watching
  • Tip Rating:
  • Also you must not miss your chance to see the clowns of our local seabird population, the puffin. These beautiful little comics are definitely a sight to behold. The puffin is an expert swimmer and often emerges from an underwater foray with six or more small fish dangling from its serrated bill. They suffer considerable losses from herring and other gulls whose numbers are increasing due to human interference.

A good way to see them is to book a whalewatching tour and see the two.

There is a good tour called Peggy's Cove Whale & Puffin Watching Tour. About an hour from Halifax.

A six hour tour is $93.00 US

Things To Do: Watch the boats
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the most beautiful sights in Nova Scotia is the colorful little boats . Even if you're not a sailor and are a true bred land lubber ....you can still enjoy. Let your imagination free ....sit on shore and watch the little boats.... you'll see lots of fishing boats , sail boats, yachts and more. enjoy
