Closed for the Winter...?!

by Shihar - last update: Feb 1, 2006

Saw snow...not much else

Welll,,, we kinda misjudged the timing for this adventure....didn't do a whole lot of research before this trip. (FYI-This was pre-VT)

March is not the best time to visit this Park. The main road was snowed in, the Visitor Center closed for the season, no ranger at the post, and we were the only ones in the entire Park. We thought that we might be able to do some kinda of winter activity here(snow shoe, snow mobile..etc)....Nope, it was a total ghost town..

At very least we got some idea of the Park and the surrounding area. Oh well...we learned our lesson. We'll be back again some other day, when we get our act together and plan accordingly. Looking forward to the next visit..

Close to Denver...

The Park is about a 2 hour drive from Denver. Trail Ridge road takes visitors into the center of the Park over the edge of a steep mountain ridge.

RMNP has about the same amount of visitors as Yellowstone NP(3.3 million annually) even though is significantly smaller. Reason mainly being do to the closeness of the Denver. However, park officials are increasingly worried about the urban sprawl effects on the Park.

How to get there..

Take I-25 North from Denver (about 65 miles) or I-25 south from Cheyenne, WY (90 miles). Then US 34 to Loveland. From the west, pick up US 34 at Granby.
