  • Paradise Island is one of Nassau's thriving resort areas. The center of it all is Atlantis, which South African developer Sol Kerzner has turned into one of the most complete resort-casino complexes in the world. The huge property includes a 14-acre/6-hectare water scape with cascades, a lazy river for tubing and a lagoon for snorkeling. Some attractions are off-limits to those not staying at the resort.

  • This is a cool place( A pirate museum) for at least one visit. If your not taking any children you might not like it to good. We had our 12 y/o son at the time and he loved it. It's perfect for young boys. They learn about the pirates and walk through a pirate like ship. The people who work there were really nice. I thought it was a bit over priced though.

  • If you are at awe over water towers, then by all means go see it. For me I wasn't impressed. If you see one water tower you have seen them all. I guess I didn't enjoy it because I see them all the time around my home town. Plus I didn't spend lots of money and hundreds of miles for the highlight to be a water tower ;-) It cost .50 cents to venture up it. If you haven't see one Go see it. I did get a great deal on t-shirts there though. They had a few tables of t-shirts and hats. You get a better by if you buy your had at Wal-mart or K-Mart store. I paid $4.99 for one at Wal-Mart for my husband, so I thought I might get me one at the tables near the Water tower, the lady had $20.00 on a straw hat so I offered her 6 dollars she just about came over the table to chew me out...Next time I'll bring my own from Wal-Mart. ( Notice the t-shirt stand in the picture.)

  • Fort Fincastle, Nassau Bahamas, overlooking the town from Bennet's Hill was built by Lord Dunmore, about 1793 who named it after his second title, Viscount Fincastle.

In a letter to the Secretary of State of February 17, 1794, he describes it as "a battery upon a hill in this island to the Eastwards of the Government House mounting two 24 pounders, two 32 pounder Carronades, two 12 pounders, and one Howitzer, which not only covers the Battery in Hog Island (Paradise Island) but all the Town and Road to the Eastward where the enemy might probably have effected a landing."
(Tours are conducted Monday through Sunday, 8am to 3pm.)

  • Fort Charlotte is the largest and most interesting of the three forts found in Nassau. Built in 1789 by Lord Dunmore and named in honor of the wife of King George III.This fort has never fired a shot in Battle. It includes a water-less moat, draw-bridge, ramparts and dungeons. Fort Charlotte commands a fine view of Nassau Harbor. (Admission is free. Tours are conducted Monday through Sunday, 8am to 3pm.)

    Nassau Town: Parliament Square
  • Tip Rating:

  • Nassau is the seat of the national government. The Bahamian Parliament comprises two houses -- a 16-member Senate (Upper House) and a 40-member House of Assembly (Lower House) -- and a ministerial cabinet headed by a prime minister. Parliament Square's pink, colonnaded government buildings were constructed in the early 1800s by Loyalists who came to the Bahamas from North Carolina. The square is dominated by a statue of a slim young Queen Victoria that was erected on her birthday, May 24, in 1905. In the immediate area are a half dozen magistrates' courts (open to the public; obtain a pass at the door to view a session). Behind the House of Assembly is the Supreme Court. Its four-times-a-year opening ceremonies (held the first weeks of January, April, July, and October) recall the wigs and mace-bearing pageantry of the Houses of Parliament in London. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band is usually on hand for the event. COST: Free. OPEN: Weekdays 10-4.

Nassau has some interesting things to see and do, but I thought it was a little too "touristy" for my tastes.

Excellent page! You make me wanna go to the Bahamas right now. Actually, Karen and I are taking a Caribbean cruise, coming up in three weeks. It will be our first, and I can hardly wait.
