| Page Views: 271 Last Visit to Pearl City: July, 2007 | USS Arizona Memorial by GracesTrips - last update: Oct 11, 2007 |
There was nothing else I saw or visited in Pearl City except for the USS Arizona Memorial. And, instead of listing it as a tip, I thought I should dedicate a page for your information when you visit. I hope you find this helpful and I highly recommend you see this if you haven't.
If you don't know the history behind this memorial, when you visit, you will view a film describing the events that took place. The film is quite informative and not very long (23 minutes). Make sure to be on time (I'll explain this below) for your tour. If you would like to read about the memorial, you can go to the website at http://www.arizonamemorial.org/locations/arizona-memorial-location.html |
| | This wall inside the memorial lists all the soldiers entombed in the USS Arizona. Off to the left had side, slightly in front of the wall is another list of names. These are the soldiers who survived the tragedy but pass away in latter years who chose to be entombed with their fellow shipmates.
An eerie feeling comes over you when you see the ship just below the surface of the water. We could see oil on the water as residue that still comes from the ship after all that time. |
| | When you visit, don't expect to take the tour right away. We went on a Thursday at 11:30 am, our tour was schedule for 2:45 pm. We didn't make it back in time. Then I went on Friday at 9 am to get the tickets for the tour at 11:45 am. They didn't want to give me four tickets because the rest of my party stayed back at the hotel knowing we would have to wait anyway (almost 3 hours). It was their policy that all the people have to be present to receive a ticket. I was fortunate to encounter a sympathetic ticket distributor and he gave me the four tickets I needed. The tickets are free but the waiting time is unbelievable! The tour starts out with a film and then a boat ride out to the actual memorial. There is a wonderful little museum you can see (while you wait if you choose to). Also, they have very strict security regulations. No purses, backpacks, large cameras, camera bags and fannypacks. Don't even try to bring them in. You will find yourself having to walk all the way back to your car to leave your things. Small cameras and wallets were okay. We also thought it was ridiculous that they had a sign saying you should not keep your valuables in your parked cars (is that an oxymoron!).
Driving from Waikiki, H-1 west, take the Stadium/Aiea exit. Follow the signs, it's fairly easy to get to. Located at 1 Arizona Memorial Road, Honolulu, Hawaii 96818. General Information Phone # 808-422-0561. |
