Newport Jazz Festival

Some of the 2008 Sunday Attendance
Each year, the Hyatt at Newport Beach has been hosting a 3 day Jazz Festival. Nothing but the big names in contemporary jazz usually perform.

This year, on May 16th, a single performance Friday evening was with Mindi Abair. This is an intimate performance with assigned seating. I bought the tickets that include dinner at the Sol restaurant located at the Hyatt Hotel.

The Saturday, May 17th, line up was Wayman Tisdale, Bobby Caldwell, R n R, Sax Pack, Rick Braun, Kim Waters, Richard Elliot (love him), Jeff Kashiwa, Steve Cole and The Rippingtons. Not enough of my favorites for the Saturday performance so I will skip this show.

The Sunday, May 18th, (I also bought tickets for) line up was Brian Culbertson, Euge Groove (he was there last year - pic of him and I below), Summer Storm, Guitars & Sax, Norman Brown, Gerald Albright, Chante Moore, Peter White, Alex Bugnon, Jeff Lorber, Paul Taylor (my favorite), Jeff Golub, Jesse Cook (guitarist extraordinaire) and Jessey J. I will definitely attend the Sunday show. The Saturday or Sunday show is $55 per person. Well worth the cost for the literally ALL DAY event. You're allowed to bring blankets, low lawn chairs and water.

Last year's highlight for me was to see Boney James. Most jazz aficionados will buy the 3-day pass and stay at the hotel. If you ever get the chance to go, it is well worth it!
