The Spring Mountain district of Napa is known for producing some fabulous red wines. Usually, single varietals such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah. Pride Mountain Vineyard is one of the more well known Spring Mountain wineries. Appointments need to be made. I didn't opt for a tour but it must be part of the appointment. Pride Mountain is located right on a borderline of Sonoma and Napa counties. Because of this, they have to have two separate facilities to produce wine to signify it is a Sonoma or Napa wine. This is not cost effective. But, they managed to equip themselves with portable equipment to move from one side to the next by building the two facilities side by side right on that border. We enjoyed the visit and the wines are very good.

In 2016, we wanted to visit wineries in the Spring Mountain district of Napa. Making appointments 1 1/2 months prior to our visit was difficult as most wineries were filled up on their weekend appointments. So, I highly recommend you make your appointments 2 to 3 months in advance. Luckily, we could visit this winery. They are known for their cabernet sauvignon. We tasted the current vintage which was 2010 for the cabs, 2011 for Dedication (a blend) and 2013 chardonnay. All was good but not great. We did buy a couple bottle of the cab and hope aging will make it better. Many of the Napa cabs are best at about 10-20 years old. Beautiful property, a more formal wine tasting setting. Appointment is needed, wine tasting is $50.00 per person. Harald and I shared one tasting. The fee was waived because we bought some wine.

We visited this Spring Mountain winery in April 2016. This was our first appointment for the day. The winery is the actual home of the owner. Wine tasting conducted in his dining room. Our expectation was to taste cabernet sauvignon but they did not make cabs. We taste 3 vintages of merlot. The merlot was spectacular. People were coming and going picking up their orders while we were tasting and Sheldon was doing everything himself, running back and forth. His mother had just passed away earlier in the week and was the matriarch of Spring Mountain. All the appointment we had afterwards asked where had we visited and as soon as we mentioned Paloma, they knew who she was. A very hardworking woman, who was well respected. She initially only grew the grapes and sold them off for others to make wine. They decided to make their own wine and their first batch won them wine of the year in Napa. We also tasted the syrah. It was more fruit forward than we care for. The merlot was spicy yet restrained, with a great soft mouth feel and long finish. This was the best wine tasting of the day.

Located at the base of Howell Mountain. Viader (pronounced VEE-ah-dare) cannot claim to be a Howell Mountain wine because they are 200 feet below the designated elevation to be considered a Howell Mountain wine. None-the-less, their wines are very good. I'm not a fan of Cab Franc but they make a good one. They also make a very good cabernet sauvignon but it comes with a hefty price tag. They have an amazing view of the Napa Valley. Wine tasting costs $50 but will be waived with a $100 wine purchase. By appointment only.

Located in the Stags Leap region, you do not have to make an appointment. Wine tasting includes a tiny food pairing. Open daily from 10am - 4:30pm. Their red blend is pretty good and affordable. They have facility tours by appointment.

Located in the Stags Leap region, they have some great wines. The website indicates you should make an appointment but they seem to take walk-ins as well. I liked their Patriarch. But, we can buy it from our local wine store in Pasadena. They are open daily from 10am-5pm. Currently, wine tastings cost $25 per person.

Located in Oakville part of Napa. It's a bit of driving through the vineyard to get to the tasting room. Rustic setting and wine tasting costs $20.00 which is not outrageous compared to what some of the other wineries are charging these days. No appointment necessary. Open daily from 10am - 4pm.

Normally, you would find this tip under Shopping but I strongly feel this is a "MUST" Things to do tip. What can I say, it's not your typical market. It's an amazing collection of artisan purveyors selling the most extraordinary ingredients, meat, cheese, oil, spices, pastries, fresh oysters & seafood. Even if you're not hungry, I think you will find something to buy and bring home. I did! Kaffir Lime Leaves are hard to come by but they have them! I also found my Italian herbed salt that someone had given me and I was just about out. We also bought some wine here (yes, at the market instead of a winery). A recommendation for dinner one evening, we liked the wine so much that I went back to buy what they had left. Great place!

It is pronounced Cliff Lede (lay-dee). Located in Yountville. Easy to find, easy to get to. Open daily from 10am-4pm, no appointment necessary. Very nice tasting room and grounds. Their Pinot Noirs are very good.

Hall is located right on Highway 29 in St. Helena. It's a large place and their wines are very good. Worth making the stop.
