"Why so many Towers in San Gimignano?" San Gimignano by GracesTrips

San Gimignano Travel Guide: 406 reviews and 1,247 photos

We spent a few hours checking out the town of San Gimignano, a walled in medieval hill town. Say San Gimignano three times! It's a tongue twister! It's known for the many towers all over town. They more or less look the same, very retangular in shape.

Back in the middle ages (around the 10th century), the town began to increase in wealth. The richest Tuscan families flaunted their wealth by building towers and other landmarks.

The heart of town is the Piazza della Cisterna.
