We arrived into town at midnight. So, we went right to sleep and ventured out first thing in the morning taking the boat taxi up the river to see the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. This was absolutely an amazing sight to see! Under better circumstances I could have enjoyed it even more but I was hot, tired and bumping into the many tourists that were also there. Definitely, this is something you cannot miss if you visit Bangkok.
Then, a tuk-tuk driver proposed to take us to a couple of other sites close by for 20 baht which is equivalent to US$.61 (less than a dollar). Ha! ha! Joke was on us because along the way, he offered to take us to the cultural center which was nothing more than a jewelry store. The next stop was a tailor but by that time we were hip to where he was coming from. We told him we didn't want to spend our day shopping and demanded him to take us to the sites he originally promised. He became a little angry and explained how 20 baht doesn't even pay for his gasoline. So, we told him to take us where we wanted to go and we would decide how much more to give him once we got there. Luckily, we had a map with us and we managed to find our way back to the nearest boat taxi afterwards.
That evening of our first full day, we had dinner at the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. This is the tallest building in Bangkok. By having dinner at the hotel, you can go up to the viewing deck at no extra cost. We were fortunate to have a clear evening and saw Bangkok all lit up! |

| | The next day, after breakfast, we took the sky train to Siam Square. After our lunch there, we decided to head back to our hotel and roamed the streets nearby where there were many antiques dealers. Everything seem to be authentic but that was never mentioned. They all used the same description "antique" .
After dinner, we met with Winston (VT member travelagent4thailand) and his wife, Marina. They drove us to see the "old city" part of Bangkok and provided us with some interesting information and history. They also took us to a popular dessert shop that had us laughing out loud (lol). See tip under Off the Beaten Path. Winston and Marina, we thoroughly enjoyed your company! We would love to host you when you come to LA.
We only spent a couple of days in Bangkok and flew to Krabi to spend the rest of our trip there.
