We arrived at the Incheon International Airport from LAX after 12 1/2 hour plane flight. By taxi, it took us another 45 minutes to an hour to arrive at our hotel in Seoul. The weather was cool and cloudy and remained about the same for the days to follow while we were in Seoul. I'm glad I brought an umbrella, I used it for the day I was on my own while my boyfriend had to attend a business meeting. We spent the second half of our trip down in Busan. Luckily, the weather improved and enjoyed a pleasant stay there.
Seoul is an extremely large city. About 10,000,000 people today live in Seoul. The city is divided up into provinces/regions with specific names. I think, the regions are named after a rather large street in that area or a shopping/market center.
We used the Metro to get around and a lot of walking. My legs ached despite that I work out on the treadmill a 3-4 days a week (to give you an idea how much walking I did). The day I was on my own, I got to the Metro and all of a sudden was stumped as to which side of the Metro to board. A little old man saw me looking at my map and proceeded to ask me where I was going, in Japanese. I answered back in Japanese and he told me which side I needed to be on. He was perplexed, and asked why I couldn't read the Japanese posted on the signs. I'm American and can only speak very little Japanese. The signs were also posted in English but my destination wasn't posted so I wasn't quite sure which direction I needed to go in. What I don't get is how he knew I was Japanese. |

This is Chiwoo (on the left) and Poul (pronounced Paul) on the right. They are bartenders at the new Hard Rock Cafe located in Itaewon. Both of them spoke a decent amount of English and I enjoyed talking to them both! |
Seoul is quite Westernized in terms how similar it is to the large metropolitan cities around the world. Yet, the marketplaces that sell food, spices, produce, fish, etc. is not something you would see in the USA. Our health department would "freak out"!
I posted a retrospect of my visit on my South Korea page, if you are interested. | | |

Like you, I find them interesting and informative. | Orchid899 Mon Aug 25, 2008 21:52 UTC Hi. Thank you so much for sharing your trips. Especially the one where you visit S.Korea. I've always wanted to go. There is a Starbucks in S.K. that is the only one in the world with non English letters on the logo sign. Have you seen it? | mallyak Thu Jul 3, 2008 23:08 UTC Hi Grace-We managed to complete seeing all of Seoul you have written about in a little more than a day.Depart in a few hours for London ...along haul indeed! Thanks to your pages! | Ewingjr98 Sat Jun 21, 2008 05:06 UTC Thanks for the Seoul tips and the congrats note!
