Shopping

Shopping

Dublin although expensive, is a great place to shop. Grafton street is quite a good place to start, its in the city centre and near the sights and you’ll find some good shops there, for the smaller more exclusive (but not necessarily more expensive shops) check out exchequer street, its in the Grafton st area its great for fashion & shoes. Also try to get to the powerscourt townhouse, South William Street, and of course the Stephens green shopping centre, where you will find a range of high street stores.

Henry Street is another main shopping area and is located just north of O’Connell bridge, there are a good selection of high street stores here. The jervis shopping centre is not bad, and Roches stores is pretty impressive on the upper levels you will find a lot of familiar stores such as zara, monsoon, pull & bear and river Island, these are just a few, this is a good store
.
But ........... for the really serious shopper........!!!!!!! get yourself to the Dundrum town centre, its approx 5km from the city centre, but sooooo worth the trip! its easy enough to get to, as you can get the luas (from st stephens green). The selection of shops out there is fantastic , to many to mention but all of the usual high street stores & many more that you will have never heard of. The best thing about this SC is there is something for everyone from BT2 to penny’s so all budgets are catered for and I defy you not to fall in love with at least one pair of shoes out there

Other places to shop are The Liffey Valley Centre, and Blanchardstown centre. Liffey Valley is in the western suburbs and Blanchardstown is on the North side

I would rate them in this order starting with the best

1) Dundrum Town centre;
GREAT for fashion & shoes in particular and some really great kids clothes shops

2) Grafton Street; incl. exchequer st, powerscourt townhouse & Stephens green centre. Good for browsing, your most likely going to be around here viewing the sights anyway but this is an expensive area. Don’t miss brown Thomas!
(They have a great shoe department where I can be found pondering over the decision do I sell the house and buy these boots I’ve fallen in love with?.... or .......do I keep the house and continue to feed the kids and just visit the boots once a week and pray for the sale to end all sales ?)

3) Henry Street; Jervis st mall is great, but Roches Stores is the main shop here its great for fashion & children’s clothes and check out the household dept if your looking for souvineers. You will find Irish crystal and pottery, anong other irish made goods, not only will they be cheaper you will also find a bigger selection here than in the typical souvineer shop.

4) Blanchardstown Centre.
Would be higher on the list except its kind of out of the way its on the north side of the city about 6km from town centre and you can’t get to it on the luas

5) Liffey valley. its not a bad sc but has only two shoe shops that are worth going to so I havent rated tt very highly, it is good for fashion.

Pros:"Its a small place, great for shopping, acrhitecture, historical sights and nightlife"
Cons:"It is expensive, and you need raingear"
In A Nutshell:"Its no longer a "dirty old town" its grown up into a real gem."

Audrey - Doesn't it violate some Irish law that you live in Dublin and hate Guinness? ;-) The guinness over there is SO much better than ours!

Drimnagh Castle--now that's an interesting place! I enjoyed the commentary about your grandfather's medals and his heroics at Kilmainham Jail--a nice family story to hand down through the generations.
