START WALKING FROM HERE ................ ........... if you want to see colonial Salvador......
These pictures on this Intro page are from my first visit to Salvador , I believe in 2000 , when I was still married to Charlotte , my exwife who has lost 40 pounds in the meantime and is happily remarried in California. But as we're still friends and traveled so much together there's no reason not to show the pictures.
On this picture we have just taken the Lacerda Elevator up to Praça Tome de Souza. There we asked someone to take this picture of us with the Palacio Rio Branco behind us.
From this spot you can easily walk to and see the famous Salvador Churches from the 16th , 17th and 18th centuries , the old cobble stone streets and the (in)famous Largo do Pelourinho with Salvadors oldest buildings , the former ( untill 1835 ) site of slave auctions and slave "punishing" ( whipping...) . See the tip section for pictures of churches and Pelourinho...
BTW , while in Salvador this first time I met also with VT member Martinelli , whom I had known before and who had introduced me to VT.... |
| | WELL... FIRST THE TOURIST SHOPS.... No , it wasn't so bad after all... of course there are beggers and street vendors near every church trying to get a little slice but it was rather discreet and we were not harrassed.
With us , a Baiana lady in typical lavish folklore outfit ready to have pictures taken for and with tourists.... for free..... I really liked that....
But while Charlotte kept on lingering on in tourist shops looking for I don't know what , I stepped out , bought a soft drink , sat down in the shade , lit a cigarette and enjoyed the entourage and the ongoing activities on Terreiro de Jesus a.k.a Praça 15 de Novembro..... |
| | INSIDE THE COURTYARD OF IGREJA SAO FRANCISCO In the tip section I will talk more about this church. I'll mention imported luxury tiles from Portugal which you can see here behind us. This courtyard is beautifull , perfect for nice pictures. |
