Take me back to San Andres

by brad216 - last update: Oct 13, 2005

Sunset to another beautiful day in San Andres

All-Inclusive is the way to go!!!

I spent 5 nights/ 6 days in San Andres over New Year's 2005. We stayed at the Decammeron Aquarium all-inclusive resort. For all you Americans tired of spending loads of $$$$, this is the vacation spot for you.

Depending on what month you go there, it's $80-$120/ night for 2 people to have a room with all your meals and liquor included. The buffet for breakfast and lunch is nothing special but they offer wonderful dinners in the many different restaurants (seafood, italian, steak).
The resort throws a wonderful beach party for New Year's eve and each night at 10pm offer the staff doing different shows.

Even though food is all-inclusive, I recommend going to local restaurants and bars a few times to get more of a local flavor to your trip.

I don't want to hear all those people scared of going to Colombia as a reason not to visit. San Andres is actually closer to Nicarague than it is to Colombia and is very safe. For those of you (like myself) who do not speak fluent Spanish, there is more English spoken here than in Colombia proper. Most of the tourists I saw there were from Canada, they run many junkets from Toronto to San Andres.

My wife and I took advantage of a full day boat trip which took you around they island and then to a couple of cays off the coast. They do sell individual trips and although you usually visit the Aquarium cay and Johnny Cay, I have to recommend that you skip the Aquarium and just make the visit to Johnny Cay. Here there is a nice strip of beach to take sun and some nice cool, choppy water to enjoy. There is also a nice Rasta feel to Johnny Cay along with some places to get lunch.

Do be careful of all the street vendors. Although not as agressive as some other islands, they will walk with you for a block or two in order to try and sell you bracelets, earings, sunglasses, etc...

Overall, we really enjoyed our time in San Andres and look forward to going back again....maybe next time when we start our family.
Not a bad view from the balcony of our room

Pros:"Decameron Aquarium resort, free alcohol at the resort, cheap prices"
Cons:"pushy street vendors, high winds during Dec-Jan."
In A Nutshell:"As they sing in a popular song there... "Please, take me back to San Andres.""
