The U.S. Virgin Islands

by BadDrachenfels - last update: Aug 22, 2005

St. Thomas

Best known of the U.S.Virgin Islands and home to cruise ships and the largest airport. The island is dotted with resorts, a few nice beaches outside of these resorts, some great restaurants and some historical sites. Charlotte Amelia is the only real city on St. Thomas. It is a tourist destination and heavily populated in the day light hours. After 5 PM (17.00) the town shuts down. A few restaurants and clubs remain open but most nightlife is at the resorts or in clubs or restaurants outside of town. Yes, there is a Hard Rock Cafe with some good live performers in town that is open at night.

You need a car or a cab driver to get around. Traffic drives on the same side of the road as the UK. Don't walk the streets at night, especially if you are alone. Use common sense.

St. Croix

The island is pretty but home to a large industrial business base. Towns are small but have some good places to eat. Beaches are usually associated with resorts. The island is less densely populated than St. Thomas. You can reach St. Croix by ferry in summer from St. Thomas or by a small plane. Sea planes are also available and used by most commuters.

Island has a few casinos.

I like St. Thomas and St. Johns better.

St. Johns

Home to some outstanding resorts and incredible beaches. Beaches are among the nicest in the world I think. Island has parks and rural areas and some nice safe public beaches on the trunk Bay side. Sandy bottoms and clear water. Hiking can be done here as well as horse back riding.

The main town where the ferry from St. Thomas docks is small with some small bars, lots of shops, and restaurants. Woodys is a good bar and quite popular with the locals.

Sugar cane industry was big here once and there are lots of settlements and relics to see. Driving is easy here compared to St. Thomas. Lots of great vistas and view of British Virgin Islands. British Virgin Islands can be visted by a ferry if you have a passport.

St. Johns is beautiful and is beginning to develop due to that fact. You need a car rental or need to pay a tour guide/service.

see http://www.stjohnbeachguide.com/
for more info and picture of Trunk Bay beaches and resorts. The Westin is the premier destination.
