The kanheri from the Sanskrit word Krishnagiri .The Kanheir caves can be reached in various ways.cars, bus etc,But I always opt for the toughest and most eco friendly way walking!.Taxis and rickshaws are not allowed so you would need to get a tourist taxi or your own private car. A borivali local from Churchgate(C) would reach borivali in 45 minutes(fast train) and 1 hours (slow train) .The railway station from where the park entrance is just a km. away.I have been there 5 times this year and December was the coldest its has ever been .
The site has 109 Buddhist caves cut by hand from the living rock of a 1500 feet high ravine in the 2nd to the 9th century A.D. These are Buddhist caves or monasteries where monks practiced their austerities dated from 1st century BC to 9th century AD chiseled out of the volcanic rock are simple small chambers, known as viharas (cells for monks). A few are larger & deeper chambers known as chaityas (for congregational worship). The main one which has colossal figures of standing Buddha, 7 m in height, on each side of the entrance porch, a colonnade of 34 pillars surrounding the interior halls and a overtopped stupa (shrine) at the far end, all carved in to the existing basaltic rock.
