"Gilan Province, Iran" Ostan-e Gilan by MarkHale

Masouleh is a unique village on a steep hillside, and one of the places I insisted upon seeing in Gilan Province. My friends and I encountered several local folk practicing their trades or selling their produce on the winding path from the foot of the village to the highest points. What great "photo ops" for me with my camcorder and my friends' digital cams!

Smokin' the houcka pipe on the boardwalk in Anzali

Living in the US port city of Norfolk, I felt at home in Anzali, but I didn't get to sample its renowned caviar. The feeling was that of any Western seaside resort as we strolled the "boardwalk" - except for the cafe with houckas and the ubiquitous chay. In my profile pic, the setting is the rocky shore of the Caspian Sea somewhat south of Anzali.

From the hilltop overlook of lovely Lahijan

Of all the cities I visited in Gilan Province, Lahijan was the most attractive and relaxed. The traffic was saner, the civic pride most apparent. It is a blend of all those elements that are "Gilecki." How I wish I could have enjoyed more time in this city! From mountains to sea, my heart was in Gilan.
