My parents had been to Dubrovnik in the 70s and had loved it, so 30 years on, when we decided to go to Croatia on holidays, of course I wanted to see it for myself. The city has been so lovingly restored that you can see very little of the severe damage Dubrovnik has suffered during the war, but a few houses were left, presumable as a reminder. You can see where the city got the name 'Pearl of the Adriatic' from - it is very beautiful. However, it didn't feel quite real. A little clean for my liking, a little too polished and within the city walls there were no real, every-day shops at all. People do live here. There is a school, for example, but it felt more like an open air museum. |
