Remenberence

Passendale, in the same way as Zonnebeke, another town of the region were rendered famous by the facts of war of 1917.

A British offensive attempted then to sink the German lines. The continuous fight for a battle of during 100 days which more than 500 000 men were put outside fight.

The gain was of only ...8 km land won! But this battle marked a decisive turn regarding the war end.

Passendale, au même titre que Zonnebeke, un autre village de la région ont été rendus célèbres par les faits de guerre de 1917.

Une offensive Britanniques tenta alors d'enfoncer les lignes Allemandes. Les combats incessants durèrent 100 jours pour une bataille de tranchées durant laquelle plus de 500 000 hommes furent mis hors de combats.

Le gain fut de seulement ...8 km de terrain repris ! Mais cette bataille marqua un tournant décisif en vue de la fin de la guerre.

We are located here to the biggest cemetery of the Commonwealth.

Not less than twelve thousand young men found here their last abode.

They came from all horizons: we finds here Canadians, Scots, Irishmen, New Zealanders , Australians, Indian,... all comings to lose their lives on the ground of Flanders...

Nous nous trouvons ici au plus grand cimetière du Commonwealth.

Pas moins de douze milles jeunes hommes ont trouvés ici leur dernière demeure.

Ils venaient de tous horizons: on trouve ici des Canadiens, des écossais, des Irlandais, des Néo-zélandais, des Australiens, des Indiens, ... tous venus perdre leurs vies sur le sol de Flandre...

Missing Memorial.

Ieper on the skyline

Engraved in in the rock of the long exterior wall trimming the cemetery bottom, 35000 names of disappear.

To the exterior one, close to the parking lot a center of welcome offers to the visitors all a series of information.

While putting you back to the wall to the bottom cemetery, you will notice the turns of the city of Ieper on the skyline...

Gravés dans dans la pierre du long mur extérieur bordant le fond du cimetière, 35000 noms de disparus.

A l'extérieur, près du parking un centre d'accueil offre aux visiteurs toute une série d'informations.

En vous mettant dos au mur au fond cimetière, vous apercevrez les tours de la ville d'Ieper au bout de l'horizon...

Thank you for great info on Passendale. I've been to the war memorials in many places, each time it really breaks my heart when I see their ages. Many of my kids' friends joined military after graduating from high school. I want them all come home safely.
