Gargillesse : The church. She dates back to the middle of the XIIe century, dedicated to Our Lady, she is Roman style.
Our lady possesses one of the more beautiful colections of capitals of Berry. An admirable "comic strip" cut in has rock mixing, in 129 capitals, fantastic and symbolic animals (lions, centaurs, birds. ..) and scenes of the old and New Testament. The most famous one, probably inspired eardrum of Moissac (Tarn and Garonne), represent, three by three, the twenty-four old persons of l'Apocalypse.Elle date du milieu du XIIe siècle, dédiée à Notre-Dame, elle est de style roman.
Notre-Dame possède un des plus beaux ensembles de chapiteaux de Berry. Une admirable "bande dessinée" taillée dans a pierre mêlant, en 129 chapiteaux, animaux fantastiques et symboliques (lions, centaures, oiseaux...) et scènes de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament.
Les plus célèbres, probablement inspirés du tympan de Moissac ( Tarn et Garonne ),
représentent, trois par trois, les vingt-quatre vieillards de l'Apocalypse.

Gargillesse : The crypt. Under the bedside of the church, spreads a vast crypt accessible by a stairway in the shoulder south.
Its arches are decorated frescos dated back to the XIIIth to the XVIth century representing equally scenes of the Holy scriptures.
This was, without protests, one of the strong points of our trip. The mayor of the town had the kindness of us given all the explanations on the subject of the frescos and of their restoration. Sous le chevet de l'église, s'étend une vaste crypte accessible par un escalier dans le bas-côté sud.
Ses voûtes sont décorées de fresques datées du XIIIe au XVIe siècle représentant également des scènes des Saintes-Ecritures.
Ce fut, sans conteste, un des points forts de notre voyage. Le maire du village a eu la gentillesse de nous donné toutes les explications au sujet des fresques et de leur restauration.

Gargillesse : The crypt: Holy Mary. The wood statue of Holy Mary above the altar would have been brought back east by a crusade soldier.
The maire explained us that not less than eight put to bed successive paints must to be removed before discovering the polychrome layer of origin La statue de bois de la Vierge au-dessus de l'autel aurait été ramenée d'Orient par un croisé.
Le maire nous a expliqué que pas moins de huit couches de peintures successives ont dus être enlevées avant de découvrir la couche polychrome d'origine

Gargillesse : The Georges Sand house . Small country house having used refuge to George Sand from 1858.
In 1958, on the counsels of the granddaughter of the writer, one tried to restore in state d' origin. She shelters currently the family collections, documents and personal objects of George and Maurice Sand. Petite maison paysanne ayant servi de refuge à George Sand à partir de 1858.
En 1958, sur les conseils de la petite-fille de l'écrivain, on a essayé de la réaménager en état d'origine.Elle abrite actuellement les collections de famille, documents et objets personnels de George et Maurice Sand.

Gargilesse : The artists You can discover while strolling in the streets many workshops of artists. The hotel of the artists is a good departure base.
You will have, maybe as us, the luck of there to meet Jean Claeys: This origin Belgian is installed since 1981 in the region.
But there are some of others.
The welcome of the artists to Gargilesse are a long tradition that Georges Sand did nothing but to amplify while inviting for example Chopin and others... Vous pouvez découvrir en flânant dans les rues de nombreux ateliers d'artistes.
L'hôtel des artistes est une bonne base de départ.
Vous aurez peut-être, comme nous, la chance d'y rencontrer Jean Claeys: Ce Belge d'origine est installé depuis 1981 dans la région.
Mais il y en a d'autres. L'accueil des artistes à Gargilesse est une longue tradition que Georges Sand n'a fait qu'amplifier en invitant par exemple Chopin et d'autres...

The site naturally defended by the deep throats of the Creuse river and Gargilesse river lent itself to the fortification. This is the castle that was at the origin of Gargilesse as early as the Xe century. Lords of Gargilesse, the Naillac build the castle and the chapel (end XIIth cent).The site naturally defended by the deep throats of the Hollow one and Gargilesse lent itself to the fortification. This is the beginning of a very long story: the oldest part is the entry of the Castle that dates back to the 12nd one. Today this is an art gallery. The castle is visited from April till September. Le site naturellement défendu par les gorges profondes de la Creuse et de la Gargilesse se prêtait à la fortification. C'est le château qui fut à l'origine de Gargilesse dès le Xe siècle. Seigneurs de Gargilesse, les Naillac bâtirent le château et la chapelle ( fin XIIe )
C'est le début d'une très longue histoire: la partie la plus ancienne est l'entrée actuelle du Château qui date du 12ème . Aujourd'hui c'est une galerie d'art. Le château ne se visite que d'avril à septembre .
