On a sunny day of February, nothing special of foresee and here we are leave with some friends to discover Lille. To guarantee us an interesting visit, I had taken contact by the intermediary one site "couchsurfing" of which I am member. And Antoine and Béatrice had replied to the call to guide us. Which happiness! So close and if ignored: after some kilometers of car, we are in the subway and a half an hour later in the middle of the heart of the metropolis.
The continuation is to discover with the passing of these pages.
Towards the year thousand, Lille is called L' Isle: an island in fact in the middle of marshes formed by the Deule. This is the river flow of the Lys river, itself flow of the Schelde. His position to the intersection of different countries favors the quick development of the commerce. To the XIIIth century are the first walls, and soon, following the example of Bruges and Ypres this develops a city of "fail". Then, as in Belgium, begins the various occupations: the Burgundy, Austria (Habsburg) (Anno 1500 = 20000 inhabitants) then Spain (Anno 1560 = 40000 inhabitants), Relative independence with the Archdukes Albert and Isabelle, Louis XIV brings it to the France by inheritance (1667), then the Dutch one in 1708 up to 1714 (return to France), 1792 the Austrians.
To the 19th century the city radiates: prefecture, universities but also industries and proletariat taking to socialism. 1911 = 218000 inhabitants. Then the 2 wars and 2 German occupations.
Today, Lille became a big metropolis of more than 1 200 000 inhabitants
Even if Lille has today the image of an international city (TGV, Airport, highways of Paris, of Reims, of Calais. .., 3th river harbor of France) and dynamic and of high cultural level (European cultural capital of the culture 2004, museum of the arts: 2nd France after The Louvre), it knew to keep its characteristics: a language (the ch'ty: diverted from the of picardy one), the party direction (Braderie), the opening to the world ( Wazemmesmarket, ...), the gastronomy (mussels, the endive or chicory for the Belgians, beer,...)
You will feel well in the middle of welcoming people.
- Pros:Wonderful, friendly people and lot to do
- Cons:Sometimes expensive and dogs lating traces
- In a nutshell:A must if you are around !
