You must check out their 'brown cafes' here in Amsterdam. I didn't realize what brown cafes mean until a Dutch friend educated me on the real meaning of it. :-)) So, let me now try and explain it to you... and you can see if I've paid attention to what I was being taught/ told! Brown Cafes are actually a warm, comfortable meeting and drinking place(s) for the Dutch and their cool friends. They mentioned that they are called 'Brown' because of the walls that were stained by centuries of tobacco smoke wafting through the air! And they like to use the term 'gezellig' because that's the Dutch word for cozy or comfortable. So, order a glass of gin and Heinekin (Dutch beer), my friends! I hope I've explained the above term correctly.
