The following prayer was found after St. Teresa's death, written on a card in her breviary. It is commonly referred to as "The Bookmark."
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God only is changeless.
Patience gains all things.
Who has God wants nothing.
God alone suffices."
St Teresa is the patron saint of AVILA. She is also recognized for her incomparable writings; her most famous works are her "Autobiography", "Way of Perfection" and "Interior Castle".
(If you are interested to know more about St Teresa, please check out my "MUST-SEE ACTIVITIES"... because after reading the abridged version of her life, you may wish to pencil in a visit to the CONVENT OF ST TERESA).
AVILA is certainly no ordinary medieval walled town. Most tourists who visit this place will either (and quite suddenly) feel a surge of chivalry or become poetic or filled with religious ferver!
As we drove across the dusty plains of the Castille region... we soon came face-to-face with our first sights of the lovely town of AVILA with its high walls encircling the entire old town.
Try walking along the vast medieval walls... and let your imagination run wild as you allow yourself to zoom back in time to the Medieval era! You can only imagine what it must feel like to hear the echoes of the approaching enemy on horsebacks with their drumbeats of war and horns-blaring signalling the Avila town folks to shut the city gates.... Your anguished cries for help at being inadvertently locked out of the city gates soon caught the attention of a brave Spanish white knight in shining armor.... He jumps across a.... Oops! Sorry to deviate this far back in time. Blame it all on the novel I've read lately. Yeah... a romance novel involving a white knight in shining armor living in medieval Spain who rescues a certain fair maiden from the enemies' clutches. ;-D I was bored, O.K?
Incidentally, my girlfriends and I were chatting idly just the other night that if such a scenario were to happen in modern times, the modern man will probably tell the fair maiden 'Hey honey, don't worry. Hang in there. I'll call for reinforcements.' We girls doubt that the modern man will want to lay his life for a fair maiden.Go ahead guys, prove us girls wrong! ;-)
Alright, back to reality and to Avila and more historical attractions:
Avila is also the birthplace of Saint Teresa. Situated at 1,130 meters above sea level, this 1,000-year-old town boasts a population of 50,000 people.
UNESCO has also recognized the importance of this town and in recent times, has declared Avila a World Heritage site!
As for the weather, it can get especially chilly in autumm - like when we were there. Anything less than a real winter coat and you'd freeze to your bones. I've been told, in the summer, Avila can offer some relief from the intense heat of the south of Spain or even Madrid.
As for their imposing high walls, it is considered one of the best preserved in the world today. If you wish to take a walk at the top of the wall, be prepared to pay a small fee.
Some of the major tourist attractions here include the following:
- The Cathedral
- Basilica de San Vicente
- The City Wall
- Walking in the foot steps of Santa Teresa
- Monastery of the Incarnation
AVILA is also considered a World Heritage City in Spain. No mean feat. Definitely worth seeing.
Although this town was only a 1-day stop for us, it was enough to entice us to come back again in the near future.
I hope you'll enjoy this medieval old town just as much as I enjoyed presenting it to you.
"Spirit of place! It is for this we travel, to surprise its subtlety; and where it is a strong and dominant angel, that place, seen once, abides entire in the memory with all its own accidents, its habits, its breath, its name."
