Falling In Love With This Lovely University Town

The beautiful city of SALAMANCA welcomes you!

Bathed in resplendent golden, Salamanca is located in the northwest region of Spain, near the Portuguese border and 2 hours from Madrid, the capital. With its 2 universities (one of them the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe), 2 cathedrals and its many palaces and churches Salamanca balances the pace of contemporary university life with the charm and dignity of its historic and cultural status as a centuries-old city. Salamanca has a lively student community amidst the serene ancient masonry of its academic campus.

Come and experience Salamanca through la Casa de las Conchas (otherwise known as 'The House of the Shells'), its majestic cathedrals, its plazas, palaces and convents, and also its tasty cuisine. ;-p Yummy....

SALAMANCA is also a town whose urban landscape includes a happy marriage of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monumental architecture. If you scrutinize the building architectures closely, you'll understand what I mean.

Being labelled a 'University Town', SALAMANCA therefore boasts a hip and exclusive crowd - known simply as "university undergraduates". :-) This inevitably also means that the night life here is FANTASTIC! Alcohol is cheap; Dancing, drinking and merry-making aplenty!

So, why are you still seated in front of the PC? You should be booking the fastest flight out from (wherever you are) and head to Salamanca! ;-p

As mentioned earlier, the University in Salamanca is one (if not the) oldest in Spain. It was founded in 1218.

The most talked-about thing about this town is the frog. On one of their more famous tourist sites - a University building - stands a frog which is hidden on one of the walls. Now, if you manage to find the elusive frog without help, you are then blessed to get married within the year.

Nooooo, of course I did not find it. I tried to... but too bad, no luck! But I must admit, I was thinking at the back of my mind what would happen if I had brought home a young Spanish guy with me after this trip. :-) Yeah, you're right... Mom wouldn't like that too much.

But hey, you can go try and find it yourself. Good luck to you and your search for Prince Charming. ;-p

Another interesting aspect about Salamanca are its tourist sites - the late-Gothic Catedral Nueva (New Cathedral, built in 1733... really new huh?). The doorways of the Cathedral are so beautifully carved and decorated - worth checking out.

The City's main square - Plaza Mayor (for the non-Spanish speaking folks, 'tis pronounced as "Plar-Thar Mar-Yo") is indeed a unique artistic achievement in Baroque art.

The beautiful University of Salamanca is located just around the corner from Plaza Mayor.

There are just so many things to do here that you'll never be bored.

On a more personal note, I sometimes wish my parents had sent me to this university. After seeing Salamanca... I lamented for another week. Oh well....

Why don't you c'mon in and read on.... as I bring you on one of my most memorable trips here in Spain.

Salamanca has indeed captivated my heart. I know I'll miss this place when I leave.

BUT, I WILL RETURN! Soon.
