Siete pronti ad andare a Roma quest'estate? | One of Rome's most famous monument... |
Are you ready to go to Rome this summer?
If your answer is an emphatic - Yes, then please read on....
There will never be a city so rich in history as the "Città Eterna" aka Eternal City - once home to the Roman caesars, popes and artists. Depending on how you look at it, Rome can either enthrall you or give you a major migraine.
When it comes to schedules and opening times of shops, Rome can be mystifying and very frustrating! Do note that the pennichella (Rome's infamous mid-afternoon siesta) and LONG meals ALWAYS take precedence over every other thing! Most shops are closed between 1.00PM to 5.00PM. Sigh. |
| The most famous meeting place in the world |
| | Una Città Elegante... You see, I had planned for a major shopping blitz in this city. Oh well. Might as well I didn't shop like I'd wanted to; save me from spending unnecessarily.
Many of Rome's greatest treasures are hidden in the side alleys and its true charm lies in its ability to fascinate and surprise a tourist! |
| Odescalchi Castle - Tom Cruise Got Married Here! |
| | Le Cose da Vedere Ah, Rome... beautiful Rome!
Relish the quiet Piazzas and the bustling outdoor markets at the end of every wrong turn. Some of the most magnificent masterpieces by the builders and painters can be found lined along the piazzas like Piazza Navona, the Campidoglio, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna and Piazza San Pietro - all these being the creme de la creme. Rome is indeed a stupendous city which offers so many pleasant surprises to keep tourists (like yours truly) - spellbound.
If you wish to get away from the bustling city of Rome during long weekends, check out my 'OFF THE BEATEN PATH' section. One of my most memorable weekend getaways was to the Castello Odescalchi di Bracciano (in English: Odescalchi Castle in the town of Bracciano). This was the medieval castle where Tom Cruise wed Katie Holmes in November 2006 and the entire Hollywood glitteratti descended onto to Rome and to Bracciano!
Footnote: The article you'd be reading on this page is taken from my very first impressions of Rome in the 1990s (during my first visit). I have since gone back to Rome many times over the years... and now that I'm working with a major European bank headquartered in Milano - I have a very good excuse to visit this city now and again...
Buon viaggio!

| Pros: | "Picture yourself being in a real-life movie set surrounded by ancient Roman buildings & ruins, Renaissance art masterpieces, la Dolce Vita life-style, a warm climate, stunning Italian women & yummy pasta = Rome." | | Cons: | "Affollata, inquinata e costosa. But I've met some really nice Romans too." | | In A Nutshell: | "Italian people communicate a lot with hands, heads, arms & legs... So, if you're in Rome/Italy & do not know a word of aboriginal language, just use your hands and smile alot! At worst people will think you're an American tourist! ;-) Oops..!" |
