Ah, AVIGNON. Nestled amongst the lush vineyards of the lovely Rhone Valley, the walled city of Avignon really sparkles(!!) with artistic brilliance. The drive along the highway en route to Avignon was a long and tedious one. And how fast we traveled was also greatly hampered by the VERY STRONG Mistral winds of this region. Sigh. At one point, the winds were soooo strong that I literally spotted a bus-load of people being almost blown off the main highway! Not kidding. Avignon is basically a small medieval town located in beautiful Provence. This was THE center of Catholicism for 100 years. A French Pope used to reside in Avignon after moving here from Rome. And did you know that for a while, there were actually two rival Popes in the world i.e. one in Rome and one in Avignon! Today, there's no Pope living here and this beautiful town is now a regional center for lovers of the arts, theater and photography. I hope you'd enjoy your stay in this town! If you're interested to check out some cool panoramic/ 360 degrees shots of the PALACE OF THE POPES and its surrounding area, then click on the following links: Palace of the Popes (Scene 1)
