My trip to Srinagar was, I believe, a few years too soon. The city still has a huge military presence, with checkpoints and armed soldiers behind sand bags pretty much everywhere. Going during low season couldn't have helped either.. there was a bit of a hostile and unwelcome feel to the place, in general. We were advised of an unofficial curfew at 6pm...in a city with only one mediocre hotel bar and not much to do. The food is.. nothing worth bragging about. The national dishes are 2 variations of what taste like spam balls in different sauces. Vegetable dishes are ok (stick to the spinach), bread is good, and the Kahwa tea when served in the traditional way is delicious. Staying on a houseboat and taking a shikara ride on the Daal Lake are the best things to do here.. the moghul gardens were blah. See one if you must. I would go again out of curiosity to see its former glory come to life again, but I'll wait a few years.
