Amed is mostly an attraction for divers because of it's great and accessible reefs which include walls and wrecks, but also for its warmer waters (as compared to Southeast Bali) and it's peaceful tranquility. Unlike south Bali, which is seriously overcrowded, Amed offers visitors a little bit of quiet island charm with gorgeous pebble or volcanic beaches, cheap, quaint or up-market accomodation, friendly hosts, and a little bit of sea and sky. |
There's no loud music, noisy cars or rowdy attention seekers. Amed attracts the different tourist, one who integrates and not imposes. There are a few large fishing communities who reside on the coast of Amed but the work together with the dive operations and tourists to keep the coral reefs safe and fish harvests moderate. |
The only pity is that it seems Ameds ground water has been contaminated. Like anywhere in Indonesia, you are to drink only bottled water or boiled water, however, some of Amed's ground water seems to have been comtaimated by sea water. Only some areas are affected, but everyone has learnt to cope with it and it really isn't that big a fuss. Just that rinsing dive equipment will be a tad challenging! You can also rent little motorbikes to cruise all over the area, even ride up to Tulamben or check out the hills and rice fields. The view is awesome - bring lots of film or a big memory stick. Also ready yourself for amazing seafood at a very very afforable price. |
