Many battles were fought in Madura. The island is rich in ancient history.
The main historical events can be noted down as follows: 1624 The forces of Mataram under Sultan Agung occupied Madura. 1672 Trunojoyo rebelled and succeeded in ousting Sultan Agung's forces. 1680 With the help of the Dutch East India Company, Mataram succeeded in re-occupying the eastern part of Madura, with seats of Government at Sumenep and Pamekasan. This part of the island, however, was eventually ceded to the Dutch (VOC). Western Madura (Bangkalan, Sampang) was restored to the descendants of Prince Cakraningrat. For a further two and a half Centuries the Dutch colonial administration increased its hold on Madura This bitter situation turned even worse under the forced labour introduced by the Japanese, who occupied Indonesia in 1942, until the declaration of Independence in 1945. Unfortunately much of the awe of those years are no longer apparent in the humble town of Madura. Most foreigners are passing by on their way to Surabaya or to the islands off the east of Java. The port though a busy one, is managed by a laid back community like most areas in Indonesia, the locals seem particularly interested in monetary issues and official ranking. Village folk however are accomodating and friendly, and very hospitable.
Because it is not on the tourist map, it is quiet and dull in the evenings. Dangerous for single travellers, particularly females.
But go into the city (kota) and try the kick ass Gado Gado that this little lady makes outside the biggest hotel in Madura city (there aren't many hotels, so look for the biggest one).
- Pros:Most memorable gado gado, lovely maciks for conversation
- Cons:Dangerous for single travellers particularly females
