We weren’t plan to visit Sonoma town but we stopped here during our organized wine tour at Sonoma Valley. We had about two hours here so we just walked around the main square bit and then we check some of the restaurants and stores that are located around the square. There are many eating choices here, all of them are located around the central square, from some cheap ones (sandwitches etc) to some upscale ones. Every Tuesday a farmer market takes places in front of the City Hall (from april to October only). I wish I knew that earlier, they say its very lively like a small festival.

Sonoma is located at Northern California, 80km NE of San Francisco. It’s a tiny but cute town with no more than 10,000 inhabitants. Sonoma was established in 1823 (actually it was the last of the 21 Missions of California) but before the Spanish, Mexicans and the Americans there were natives that had lived here 12,000 years before. The 30 restaurants around the main square please the stomachs of the visitors but everyone that comes here is heading to the Wineries that spread all over Sonoma valley. The local wine is one of the most famous and definitely it’s worth to visit some of them. You can go by car using a map, there are some nice local guide books with all the wineries and all the useful information like address, timetables etc You can use Sonoma as a base and explore many wineries in the valley and the near by Napa valley too. Napa valley is more popular and because of that more crowded.
We used an organized tour from San Francisco and took us to 3 wineries, a nice day trip full of wine and no worries about maps etc :) They say Sonoma can be packed by visitors during weekends but it was very nice during a weekday. For wine lovers this excursion is a must but I think everyone will enjoy a trip at this peaceful corner of California.
