Gavrio, the port and other Andros Island, Greece Things to Do Tips

An ugly port I can say! I was very disappointed when I arrived here but then Andros became one of my favorite islands. We passed from here some times when we wanted to travel northeast but we noticed there are some stores with local products (cheese, sweets etc) If you have time before the departure of your boat visit the tower Agios Petros but don’t spend too much time here and of course don’t even try to rent a room here, there are much more beautiful places on the island.

Batsi is the touristic town of Andros. If you drive from Gavrio southeast after 7km you will easily noticed it because the seafront is full of cafes, restaurants and hotels. During summer is full of people but its almost empty off season.

There is a nice church, Agios Nektarios up on the hill overlooking the bay with nice view. What's more the beaches around Batsi are sandy and protected by wind.

From Gavrio to Mpatsi there are some nice organized beaches full of people, Xrisi Ammos and Agios Petros. Kypri is also nice. At Mpatsi is another sandy one, well organized and without wind. At Hora, Nemporia and Paraporti are nice but the wind might be a problem in this part of the island. At Korthi many beaches like Sineti, Kantuni, Plaka and of course the famous “Grias’ Pidima” just some minutes away by car but expect a lot of people (ckeck next tip). My favorite beach and the most picturesque from far is Ahla at northeast but you have to drive around 10km in dirt road.

Grias' pidima! The funniest name for a beach ever! I asked the locals and they told me that there was an old lady that commited suicide there from the big rock, because she was feeling guilty for having helped the Otomans get inside in Paleokastro castle! The big rock is amazing right there at the beach. Take some photos but don’t try to jump like the old lady! Lol

Directions: You have to drive 5’ in a dirt road and then walk down a pathway. There are signs so you wont get lost.

Hora is the capital of Andros with almost 2000 inhabitants. It’s very picturesque with nice neoclassical buildings, some nice museums like the archeological museum (don’t miss the roman copy of Hermis statue), the exceptional Museum of Modern Art, the nautical museum etc Hora situated on a headland between two beaches, Neomporio and Paraporti.
The central square is the meeting point of the locals and nice to relax in one of the cafes. In front of the navy museum if the statue of Unkown Sailor and a few meters away a small bridge that connect the land with a small island. I also like some stores’ signs that were hand painted.

Korthi is the a small seaside town located at the southerneast part of Andros. There are many restaurants and cafes to relax and also some nice beaches. The most famous sights here are the beach “Grias’ Pidima” and the ruins of Paleokastro castle.
