Kalamos is a small village town 45km North East of
Athens. It’s only 45’ away by car so many people go there, during summer especially at weekends. I visited the village from
Skala Oropou (5’ away by car) because I wanted to see the monastery of the area and the sanctuary of Amphiareos which are the basic sights and not the village! The village has about 3.000 inhabitants but most of them come during the summer because their permanent houses are in Athens.
The good this with this village is that it is built on the mountain and the view from the village is nice, overlooking the Evoikos Gulf (on a clear day you can even see the water power factory of Aliveri at Evia). The area is green because there are a lot of pine trees and I hope it will be like this in the future too because a lot of fires destroy every summer a lot of beautiful green areas in Greece :( There are at least 4 children camp in the area. Anyway, because of the trees the temperature is a little bit better than in Oropos and not so hot. The locals told me that it’s too cold during winter.
You can also go down to
Ayioi Apostoloi beach that is the seaside part of Kalamos and swim or taste the fresh fishes. There is also an open air cinema.
