Girona is about 100 km NW of Barcelona which is 75’ by train. The province of Girona is located close to the Purenes Mountains 60km from the borders with France. It’s ideal as a day trip because you can walk the old town in a day and return back to the sleepless Barcelona. We preferred to overnight in Girona because we wanted to feel more relaxed and we didn’t regret it. Like many other roman towns it built by a river with wall around the city for protection. The medieval town of Girona is great to walk into so we didn’t pay attention to the new town that much. There are several nice museums to visit, some beautiful churches, the Arab baths and what I liked most is the walk on the roman walls that go round the old town. River Oynar splits the city in two actually and its nice to walk near the river because the colourful houses mirror on it, so most of your photos will be taken at some of the bridges along Oynar river. There are many cafes and tapa bars to spend your time, the locals (even if many of them don’t speak English) are very friendly and the countless alleys leading to nowhere will be a nice puzzle for you! |

| | Some people arrive in Girona on their way to Barcelona because lost cost companies like RyanAir use Girona’s airport (10km south of the city). Don’t take the direct bus to Barcelona, try to see Girona for some hours if you cant stay one full day. You can return back to Barcelona all day because there are many trains/buses daily. You can also use Girona as a base to explore the area around, it’s close to Costa Brava anyway. |

I really enjoyed your tips, especially the various museums and bridges. My wife and I were recently in Spain too so getting lost in narrow alleys also sounded familiar! Your St. Feliu tip made me laugh ;) | ozalp Tue Apr 7, 2009 06:58 UTC Do you have any photos of the Cathedral from inside? Another great page. Congrats. |
