Once a village town

by mindcrime - last update: Nov 14, 2007

MARMARIS (in ancient times called Physkos)is one of the most attractive maritime parklands in Turkey, situated on a bay, backed by rugged pine-clad mountains. It is located in Southwest Turkey, in the province of Mugla, where the Aegean & Mediterranean seas meet and splits the two seas with a long and narrow peninsula. It makes an excellent starting point for exploring the area and the Aegean cost line. To the north lies the Gulf of Gokova, to the south the Mediterranean, to the west Datca peninsula and to the east Koycegiz lake. In ancient times Marmaris called Physkos and was an important stage on the Anatolia-Rhodes-Egypt trade route. In the 16th century Suleyman the Magnificent had a citadel built on a hill, the remains of which can still be seen today.
Marmaris used to be a sleepy fishing village some years before but in ourdays is a typical tourist resort for enjoy sea and sun. It has around 10.000 inhabitants but many more come during the summer, especially people with package tours that stroll along the brightly lit and palm-lined promenade, drink cocktails in one of the many pubs, swim in some beautiful beaches or watching football replays in the cafés.
Enjoy the Marina full of impressive yachts.
Stroll along the promenade.
Go and swim in Icmeler, once a different town now a district of Marmaris.
Go up to the castle for the view and some nice artefacts.
Visit near by towns like Dacta, Knidos, Hisarönü, Bördübet Bay, Çubucak and İnbükü forest camps

Yes, I can see that you know Marmaris well. If I ever return, I will certainly search for the Durak Cafe.
