"Welcome to Haolewood" Kailua by surf_monkey

Kailua Travel Guide: 61 reviews and 170 photos

Kailua is an odd place: scary wahine paddlers, Marines, "bourgie" locals, and various college aged trustafarians mix in a town that's seems cobbled from various pieces of Honolulu, San Diego, and the Hamptons. It's a weird place but boosts a number of advantages over grimy, generic, ersatz Honolulu and Waikiki. The night life is easy to figure out (one decent place), the people are slightly less dangerous, and those who have lived in Kailua longer than 2 years are generally relaxed and friendly. Should you go to Kailua if you are staying somewhere else? Only if you are bored with cartoon like repeating background nature of Waikiki (er - yes). Maybe you even live on O'ahu and need someplace to new to explore - try it. But what's with the EWOK stickers?

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Boardriders, Hawaii lite experience, and the cooler weather
  • Cons:No hotels, limited nightlife, and a snobby attitude
  • In a nutshell:Unique part of O'ahu not choked with tourists and not scary like the westside
