I had intended to go to Ankor Wat, but it turns out that the Chennai/Phnom Penh flight cost as much as the flight to + 7 days accommodation in + most ground transportation around Malaysia; and in Malaysia I can get a visa on arrival, whereas to get into Cambodia I have arrange a visa by jumping through hoops in India. And while I will get to Angkor Wat someday, for that kind of price and hassle it won’t be for a week trip during the rainy season. (Note to Cambodia: if you want to charge high prices for travel that’s fine, but the economy would do better if you get people into the country first.)
By default, I ended up in paradise.
Well, I stopped in Kuala Lumpur first, but that’s a very cool place in its own way. Between two days in
Kuala Lumpur I went to paradise, namely,
Penang.
Coming to Malaysia after 6 months in India was interesting and a little unsettling. I met a group of Australian ladies who proclaimed the place a dump, but were enthusiastic about the low prices. To me it looked clean, if a little shabby around the edges, and the prices were about 5 or 6 times higher than I’m used to.
