Vedaranniyam Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 13 photos

The real reason for this page is for the Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary at Kodikkari, which isn't in VT. Vedaranniyam is the last town on the coast road, so if you can’t get accommodation in Kodikkari you have to come back here. That’s all I know about it.

Between Vedaranniyam and Kodikkari are two things of note that I know of:

salt flats

miles and miles of salt flats

(Salt flats, btw, are where salt comes from. The flats near Vedaranniyam are supposed to be world-renowned; I can’t find much about them specifically, but there are a surprisingly large number of suppliers of salt in the immediate area. The salt in your shaker? It’s scraped out of dehydrated pits, carried in a basket on someone’s head, and dumped into a pile beside the road. Enjoy!)

and Sri Rama’s Feet, the spot from which Lord Rama chose NOT to attack Lanka, because heroes don’t attack from behind. It’s kind of neat – there’s a small pavilion with Lord Rama’s footprints cast in relief. You can stand on them if you like, one of few places I’ve been where you can see and literally walk in the footsteps of a god. This photo was taken from the watchtower near Rama’s Feet, which is the highest thing for…gees, it looks like forever. Half the railing on the narrow stairs up is broken clean off, and the guards were all napping.
