Monasteries on the rocks

by Aitana - last update: Nov 17, 2008

Meteora is one of the most amazing places in Greece.
Hermits established in caves from the 11th century. From the 14th century, the monks began to build monasteries on top of these crags to protect themselves from the Turkish. They were isolated, only accesible by means of rope ladders or baskets and pulleys.
Today the access is quite easier and stairs have been sculpted on the rock, so tourists can visit the monasteries.
More than 20 monasteries were built but today only six remain.

Meteora under the snow

On January 2006, just after the cold spell that covered all Europe with a mantle of snow, I travelled to Greece to attend a friend's wedding.
Afterwards, I went to Meteora.
I was very lucky because I could see incredible landscapes. The monasteries of Meteora among the snow were something amazing.
Fortunately, the sun was shining but the snow still remained in many corners.
