"Calatañazor" Calatañazor by Aitana

Calatañazor Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 11 photos

Calatañazor is a small village in the province of Soria. It seems that time stopped on the year 1000. On top of a hill, a well preserved medieval wall surrounds the village. There are remains of the castle from the XIV century, which are not so well preserved.

Calatañazor is known by the battle that took place between Sarracens and Christian troops in 1002, during the Spanish Reconquest. By then, this region was the northernmost under the Sarracen rule as the northern lands of the Peninsula had been already conquered by Christians. Almanzor, the leader of the sarracens, used to do raids in northern lands. After one of these raids, he was defeated by the armies of the kingdoms of Castile, Leon and Navarre, joint under the orders of Sancho García.
This is why it is said “en Calatañazor Almanzor perdió el atambor”, which can be translated as “at Calatañazor Almanzor lost his drum”, but the actual meaning is that he lost his talisman of unbeatable and was defeated. In fact, after this battle Almanzor fell ill and he died in Medinaceli a few days later.
