Ciudad Real is the capital of the province of the same name.
The city was founded by Alfonso X in the 13th century to fight against the Military Order of Calatrava, that dominated a wide area in the plain.
Ciudad Real has a stop on the AVE (high-speed train), which makes it closer to Madrid. But if you come by car, you will also visit other places of the province. The road network has improved in the last years, making Ciudad Real close also to the southern and eastern regions.
