First contact with the desert

How was the life in the caravan routes? Of course a short trek by camel was not enough to know it. From the beginning I could see more or less near a village. I cannot imagine the feeling of seeing sand in all the directions, during hours and days.

Every year Douz hosts the International Festival of the Sahara, a four-day celebration of traditional desert culture. The festival, usually held in winter, features traditional music and dancing, poetry readings, art exhibitions and camel wrestling.

Douz is a major palm oasis and as such a large producer of "diglat noor" dates.

Douz used to be an important stop on the trans-Saharan caravan routes. Today, it attracts tourists who are interested in seeing the desert. Douz has become a starting point for desert treks by camel, motorcycle, or four-wheel-drive vehicle.
