The norias of Hama

by Aitana - last update: Apr 17, 2008

Hama is a city on the banks of the Orontes river, also called Draco, Typhon and Axius. The Orontes is the only river in the Levant that flows northwards.
Hama is famous for its norias, which are used for watering the gardens. There are 16 norias, and it’s said that they date back to 1100 BC.
Though historically used for purpose of irrigation, nowadays the norias are almost entirely aesthetic and traditional.
