Jerash, the Roman City

by Aitana - last update: Jan 4, 2008

Jerash is at the North of Jordan. Jerash was inhabited during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Gerasa (as it was named in the ancient times) was one of the Decapolis (a federation of Greek cities). Jerash prospered due to its location on the trade routes. Under the Romans the city flourished. The construction of roman roads under Trajan improved the trade. A Triumphal arch commemorates Hadrian’s visit.
In the third century, the Jerash became a Christian city under the rule of the Byzantine empire. The Persians invaded it in 614 AD and the city began to decline. Under the Umayyads the city knew a new period of splendor but in 746 an earthquake devastated the city. During the Crusades, some of the monuments became fortresses; there were small settlements during the Ayyubid, Mameluke and Ottoman periods.
Temple of Artemis. Propylaeum
The ruins of the ancient city are very well preserved. Entering from the South, the most featured monuments are:
Hadrian’s Arch, built in 129 AD to commemorate the visit of the Emperor.
The circus or hippodrome, 245 m long and 52 m wide, it is the smallest in the Roman Empire.
The Temple of Zeus and the South Theater, able to hold 3,000 people.
The Forum, oval-shaped and irregular, enclosed by 160 Ionic columns.
The Archaeological Museum.
The Cardo Maximus, a colonnaded street that runs the length of the city, starts from the forum. Along the Cardo Maximus, you will find:
The Nymphaeum, a public fountain decorated with lion heads and dedicated to the nymphs.
The Temple of Artemis, the largest of the city, with impressive Propylaeum.
The North Theater.
There is also a series of minor temples and churches, some of them with very rich mosaic floors.
