New York

by elPierro - last update: Nov 20, 2005

New York, one of these places that you must see at least once. It's like everything you have seen on TV, but once walk in the streets of Manhattan a whole new world opens for you. You suddenly become a part of everything you have seen on TV.
There's always somethng going on New York, there's always something to do, always something to complain about, it is always busy and no matter what you want to do, or what you are looking for, whatever you need.. it is always in New York.
Empire State Building

The Big Apple

OK, so what's this BIG APPLE thing all about??
We actually have to blame the Jazz musicians for this nickname. When they were touring, they could play at a lot of different cities throughout the USA. They compared this with picking apples from an appletree. However, there is always 1 apple on the tree that's the biggest of all apples. And if you picked that apple out, it couldn't get any bigger than that. Well, New York was this biggest city possible, hence they said that they would be playing the big apple if they would be playing in NYC.
View from Central Park

Do's and don'ts

DO:
1. Go up one of the skyscrapers, the Empire State Building is the most prestigious and highest one to climb, but the Rockefeller center is a bit cheaper and still pretty high: Pro's, it's a bit cheaper and you get the Empire State Building in your panoramic view (and even better, the rockefeller center itself is excluded from your view!)
2. Times Square at night, the liveliest place of New York, a big funfair with blinding lights, advertisements and loads of people around.
3. If you know how to ride a bike, rent one and get ready for the thrillride of your life. Definately cruise down Broadway, watch out for the cars, especially the taxis and watch even more out for the pedestrians.
4. Ground Zero: That gap is still there though it looks like a big construction site now. In fact, it is. The subwaystation of the PATH express is already operational in Ground Zero, and a brandnew skyscraper on the northside is already standing.
5. Take a boatride around Manhattan. If boatrides are not within your budget, you can take the free ferry to Staten Island, it runs every half hour of the day and takes you past the Statue of Liberty. For a good view on the westside of Manhattan, take the PATH express inside Ground Zero and get off at the next stop (Exchange Place). From there you can walk by the docks and have yourself a good view.

DON'T:
1. Don't take your car with you, unless you are a millionare (which you might consider just hiring a limo) or an idiot who want's to pay $20,- per hour to park his car somewhere far away from where it should be parked. Did I mention the traffic congestions?
2. Don't go into Central Park at night, I didn't try it out myself but they say it's not the funniest place to walk around at night.
3. Don't try out kingsize menu's at fastfood shops.
4. Don't think you can walk your way from North to South Manhattan in a day.
5. Don't buy a Rolex watch on the street, if it's sold in Chinatown, it's made in China.
