Brunssum

Brunssum is a small town of just 30,000 inhabitants. It's located in the southeast of the Netherlands, in a hilly area. The german border lies to the north and east of Brunssum, making it closed in a small corner of the country.

It grew out to the current size after they started mining coal. The region of Brunssum has huge amounts of coal but nowadays they don't mine here anymore. The relics of the mining can still be seen nowaday, some hills are actually coal residu. The 2nd largest hill (250m) of the Netherlands is in fact one of these coal hills, it houses one of the worlds largest indoor ski-centres. It's not located in Brunssum but in nearby Landgraaf.
After the mines were closed down (coal became expensive), the region got into economic decay, the state supported the region resulting in some new industries as a big car plant (Nedcar) and chemical industry (DSM/Sabic), currently still popular emplouyers for the people of Brunssum.

Brunssum itself has not that much to offer, it houses a NATO command center for Northern Europe and mainly exists as a forensic community. Most people go work in nearby situated towns as Sittard and Heerlen.

As for tourists Brunssum has to rely on the "Brunssumer Heide" a (for Dutch standards) large environmental park. It is pretty hilly and houses vipers (the only venomous snake in the country, the shy little snakes can't kill you).

In the centre there's an old white Town Hall, and every 4 years (equal to the Olympics) there is the "Parade" an international folk festival with traditional dance groups from all over the world. Brunssum is at it's best during this festival.
