Budapest Things to Do

City Park (Varosliget): City Park Varosliget
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The large citypark not only functions as a park, a large Turkish Bathinghouse can be found here, the Heroes Square is the main entrance to the park with museums on both sides, and there's an island with some reconstructed buildings. You will find a Transylvanian Castle and an Austrian Palace for instance. Nice place to relax a bit and escape from the busy citylife.

    Things To Do: Ground Zero
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • There's a point that's considered to be the center of a country. Geographically this point is in the center of Hungary. But distances are all measured from the point zero in Budapest, this is considered to be the center of Hungary, the bullseye!

Basically it's just a stone pole with the text KM on the bottom. In front of it, the distances to different places in Hungary are displayed.

    Fisherman Bastion (Halaszbastya): Fisherman Bastion
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • On top of the Castle Hill in Buda, the Fisherman Bastion can be found. The white square lead to a balcony of white towers with a very nice view over the city.

The bastion is considered to be so pretty that a replica has been built in DisneyWorld in Florida.

    Parliament (Orszaghaz): Parliament
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Impressive and big, the Parliament of Hungary. Inspired of the Westminster abbey in London this building was constructed. It's not that old but as it had to look both impressive and beautifull it ends up as a nice old building on the northern edge of the citycentre.

St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika): The Basilique
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Technically this Basilique is too small to be named a Basilique. But as it's an important churchbuilding an exception was made.

The square has been redesigned a bit by the communists, but the church still offers a nice contrast between old fashioned buildings and the grey communistic blocs.

Bridges of Budapest (hidak): The old chain bridge, Szechenyi lanchid
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The most northern bridge of the citycenter across the Danube is this old chainbridge. The legend goes that the designer of the bridge was so proud of the design of this bridge that he found it to be perfect. He dared everybody to find imperfections but nobody could find them, untill on a sudden day a boy asked the architect why the Lion's only had some front teeth and no other teeth.

Out of frustation the architect jumped down the bridge into the danube and drowned himself.. naturally.. this is just one of the many legends concerning this bridge. As for the Lion's teeth... check out yourself!

Bridges of Budapest (hidak): Erszebet Hid
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The second bridge (and central one) is the newest of the bridges and used to be one the worlds longest supension bridges. Don't try to compare it with the Golden Gate bridge though.

Bridges of Budapest (hidak): Szabadsag hid
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The southern chainbridge consists of greenbrown Iron.

Legend goes that a drunk Dutchman once took a p*ss into the Danube from the middle of the bridge. Who could that be?
