Himeji Castle is imposing and beautiful. As you approach the city from Kyoto by train, you can see it rising regally among the modern buildings. It's a magnificent example of a Japanese castle and really quite different from the western ones that we are accustomed to.
In 1992 Himeji Castle was recognised by UNESCO as a building of world significance and was added to the World Heritage list. Himeji Castle is an excellent example of traditional wooden architecture and its stone walls with their white plastered walls have been well maintained. |

| | White Heron Himeji-jo's nickname Shirasagi-jo means "White Heron Castle" because the main donjon with its three smaller donjon resembles a white heron.
Though Himeji Castle has never been involved in war or battle, it has been built with layer upon layer of defences. Imposing walls and moats protect its ancient occupants.
Today, we can climb up to its upper most level of the tower. Warning : get ready to climb many steep stairs!!! |
Stroll into the past Its grounds are serene and peaceful. On weekends, many local and foreign visitors alike come here to have a feel of what it's like to go back to the past and to absorb its beauty.
