Athens was named after the Goddess Athena, the protector where the locals believe that she is still looking out for them today. People here are so friendly and helpful. When I told them that my niece is called Athena, they were amazed and touched.
At small restaurants where you dine with locals, they will gladly share what they have and give you a history lesson or two! |
| | Its tradition and history Athens is an incredibly ancient city. It's really awesome to be walking along the streets among moden buildings and roadworks, and stumble upon an old relic. It's no wonder that the city is under constant construction as every time they dig, they'll discover something old and important, they'll have to stop and go around it! So it takes forever to complete and nothing is according to plan.
The Athenians are very proud of their heritage and try to incorporate in all they do. Just look at the recent Olympic mascot (Athena and her brother Phevos) and even the President's guard costume. This guy is wearing the traditional costume of Northern Greece with short baggy pants, fez and pompoms on shoes. |
