Kiev (Kiyv) is the capital of Ukraine, has a population of almost 3 million people and lies on the banks of river Dnieper (an ancient trade route).
The city's location is unique as it occupies the hill next to river bank. The natural landscape plus the numerous historic monuments most of which underwent renovation or were rebuilt to their original look leaves visitors with unique impressions.
If you add the friendliness of the local people (despite the language barrier) and the excellence of local beer (!!) it makes a nice destination for a short break.
